Cooking Experiments: Long Term Food Stores...

Got the idea for this post last night while rummaging through a sample pack of long term storage foods from Pleasant Hill Grain. The idea it's self actually struck me half way through making an experimental stew from some of the contents in the can... That experiment was a roaring success, so I was experimenting a bit more this morning... I actually remembered to grab the camera this time.

I decided to try out making the eggs, some cheese sauce, and the potato dices (as hash browns/home fries)

First on the agenda... re-hydrating the potatoes.

For the potatoes, the sample pack was approximately 1 cup dehydrated, and when re-hydrated it was approximately 2 cups.

Next up making the eggs...

I used 3 tablespoons of eggs mixed with 11 tablespoons of cold water... I variated from the instructions here, as using the said 9 tablespoons made the eggs seem a bit thick, so I thinned them out a bit.

Little salt and pepper added for flavor.

Next the cheese sauce...

I forgot to take pictures of this part, as I was watching the potatoes cook, but if you've ever made mac and cheese out of the box... it's essentially the same stuff.

The finished product...

Breakfast.

My impression... the food was quite good, make sure if you're stocking away food for an eventual disaster, be sure to put away some seasonings, as they can only help make things taste better.

Good Job Scott, It's all about trying out the food you store. It expands your options for long term food storage.

Yea, figured I might as well give it a whirl, seeing as I may have to eat this stuff one day.
